The Medical Cannabis Division (MCD) of the New Mexico Department of Health registers patients and caregivers into the state’s medical marijuana program. The MCD only issues electronic MMJ cards to participants in this program. Before patients can join the program, they need to visit their medical providers who would start their application process after certifying them medical cannabis use.
Medical providers wishing to certify patients for the New Mexico medical cannabis program must complete the state’s Medical Provider Application on the Online Patient Portal. New Mexico also mandates certifying providers to be licensed to prescribe and administer controlled substances in the state as well as maintain doctor/patient relationships with the individuals they certify. To be eligible for a medical cannabis card in New Mexico, a patient must be diagnosed with one of the qualifying medical conditions recognized under the state’s medical cannabis law. New Mexico allows in-person and telemedicine consultations for patients visiting their medical providers when seeking new or renewing their registration in the medical cannabis program. The costs of these consultations are determined by each provider and may range from $100 to $400.
The MCD does not charge for patient or caregiver registration in the New Mexico medical cannabis program. As it only issues electronic Registry IDs to patients and caregivers, it also charges no fee for new or renewed medical cannabis cards.
